YA SOY OPEN WATER, Y AHORA… QUÉ? – I’M OWD AND NOW… WHAT?

Hola!

Hi there! Today is a Holiday in Madrid, long great weekend for diving, but as I told you yesterday, this is a dry weekend, for writting and resting.

When I finished my OWD course (it was turbulent and full of great stories, which I will share with you as soon as we have more confidence), I confronted the moment of diving for the first time alone, and in a different place, 20 days after finishing the open water. But before I booked in a diving center in Madrid a refreshment session, for being sure that I managed all exercises. Imagine the face of the instructor in the swimming pool, when I told him that I received the training of the OWD the week before. This kind of refreshment is conceived for divers without diving for years…

I have to confess that I am a control freak (if you have not noticed yet), so the email I sent to different diving centers for booking the dives could have been considered a quality control test of PADI (the divers certification organization biggest in the world, they issue the certifications for around 70% of the divers in the world). My list of questions (more or less all questions my former instructor considered was relevant to know): hyperbaric chamber, dives organization, maximum depth, number of divers on each dive, the age of the equipment, if they bring an oxygen equipment on the boat,… and so on!! If now, as diving instructor I receive that long list of questions, I would have thought: “She’s a freak!!”.

I chose the diving center which sounds more serious in its answer. It was located in Las Galletas (Tenerife), a great place for diving. My interlocutor, the Spanish instructor and my future teacher in the Advanced Open Water (I talked about him yesterday, he is the one who used the Mares AvantiQuattro). Please, never keep any question, because at the end it is a matter of your safety.

Now I prefer to trust in friends that can recommend me places where they have been. In that occasion, it was a success (I have to say in other cases it was the opposite with other locations…). I repeated 4 other times the next year, and I learned most of the principles which rule my dives, I confronted many fears, I meet great people (Jota, I send you a kiss, I hope you are reading this, thanks for everything, you are awesome!!), and above everything I enjoyed an amazing underwater, with a good safety protocols. This was in 2005… I have to come back to Tenerife!!

To the ones on their way to the sea, or diving already, I am very envious, and I hope you enjoy and share the experiences next Monday. To the ones not divers yet, here you have an appetizer. To all others, have a great Friday!!
