Adios Roatan - Goodbye Roatan

In a few hours we will depart to Cancún, and we hope the airport remains oponed and arriving on time home.

Here you have some photos from the surface, yesterday we went for a little shopping to West End, the area where most of the diving centers are located. No comments, photos talk by themselves.

Have a great weekend, this is one of the last “bridges” of the year, so I wish you good dives!!

Vete ya, huracán – Get out hurricane!

After a long night with intense winds and strong rain, we thought we could not dive. The responsible, the hurricane arriving today to Cancún (we hope on Friday we could leave from there).
Our diving center was the only one that decided to dive today. We found currents, no visibility, but many life. This water is very grateful.

But the second dive was impossible. We decided to abort the dive when we were on navigation. The surface was impossible, and it would be crazy to dive, because it was impossible to see a diver head on the surface with the intense waving.

Tomorrow is our last day of diving, so we will not be able to do 3 dives. It is needed a period of 24 hours between the last dive and the flight to Cancun. I am afraid that our taste of this trip will not be good, it was impossible to dive on the Marine Reserve, and we lost one third of the acquired dives. And, honestly this island is for diving, because on the surface there are only a few things to do…

A hurricane is getting closer to Honduras, and we are suffering the effects. The sea is complicated, and we continue diving outside the reserve, the most beautiful side of the island.

Nevertheless, today we have been on a classic, Mary’s Place, a dive with canyons starting at -100 feet, ascending to -60 feet. The life on the walls was unbelievable.

After an hour of navigation, with waves and a disgusting rain, we went again to the water. Once again, we have seen an area of different corals, sea rods, and after the safety stop, one of the divers has seen something moving deep down. We went on that direction very fast, I thought it was a moray, but down there, I found in front of me a nurse shark of 6 feet long.

The encounter has been so unexpected, that photos were not my priority. The shark felt a little trapped with the photographers, and he has decided to escape right in front of me. I was so surprised that the photo I made it is not very good, I reacted when he was around 6 feet away.

The rain has worth it, because the shark seen today was not prepared.

We do not know if tomorrow we could dive, it is raining very strongly for the last hours, and tomorrow the wind expected has a strength 8 bft. If we do not dive, I will post you some photos of previous dives.

As you can see, this is a "macro" trip, the difference on quality is obvious...

Y el tercer día... el tiburón - And the third day... the shark

I have to admit that I was expectant and a little scared with the idea of being with 15 sharks waiting for their lunch. Your heart is beating at 1000 per minute while you descend to the point. We were going to be on a second line, with our tanks closed to the reef, and as I was a little scared, I did not intend to interact with the sharks.

Until the first one arrived.

Sharks are for me the most sophisticated animals, inside and outside the sea. And they did not disappointed. The first 10 minutes we were watching how they were getting closed, the next 10 minutes we were diving with them. It was amazing seeing from your right, your left, always with a little distance, of course.

Finally, after their lunch from a white bin (while we are apart) you can dive again with them, and you can take a tooth if you find it. As you will see on the photos, I do not know which was the biggest mess, 17 sharks fighting for a piece of fish or 14 divers looking for a tooth…
After 6 years dreaming with being closed to a shark, finally I made it, for 25 minutes I have been around a group of sharks!!

Today weather was better, but tomorrow again will be worse than the previous days… the aquarium shall wait to the next trip… Let’s continue tomorrow.

Tras la tormenta perfecta – After the perfect storm.

Well, here we are in Roatán, and definitely we have not chosen the best week. Yesterday, it was raining for almost 24 hours, tropical strength, and with a coast that seems made of chocolate.

Even though, and after hours of discussions with the diving center, we have made a few dives out of the reserve (because the reserve is really affected by the storms and it is not accessible), and we have enjoyed with several corals, lobsters and small life.

Tomorrow we will have encounter with sharks, how scary!! I have been able to connect with a wifi, so I think I will be able of sharing some things.

Here you have some photos, they have not good quality, as I said the weather conditions are not the best.

Roatán allá vamos - Roatán here we go

Well, in a few hours I hope one plane will take us there. The weather forecast is not good, it seems we will have rain every single day, but life underwater will be there for sure, and we will enjoy a lot in one of the most famous reefs in the world.

I am not sure if wifi promised by the hotel will be real, if so, I will share with you everything we see and do. If not, then next week is probably you will not see updates here.

Here you have a video of what we will see. I do not like feeding for getting closer to animals, but this is what we have there, so we will do the dive. Finally I will be closed to a shark, thinking about it a huge smile comes to my face. I hope this time is my definitive!!

Have a great weekend, and let’s keep in touch!!

Otra película, otro clásico – another movie, another classic.

Here you have a classic movie, inside and outsider of the diving environment. Based on a true story, in 2003 was opened the movie “Open water”, the story of 2 divers on their holidays, which boat forgets them at the end of a dive.

The movie came to my mind probably because I am no a countdown of a similar tryp, but I hope not to make the mistakes of this couple, and most of all, the guide will remember us… and will not leave us alone there!!

Please, tell me what do you think about this movie. The bad guy, is always the same, and I really like these animals…

A few days ago, I talked how I was cleaning my regulators, and told you the disasters the salt can make on our equipment.

So I used a current stroke in one of my last dives, and this week I tried to clean it. Here you have the photos 30 days after the dive. It is impossible to open the clips. To be honest, when I saw the stroke, I thought that because of the blog maybe I broke it… and I have been very closed.

ANTES – BEFORE.

For cleaning the stroke, I used water and wine vinegar. The stroke has been on the mix around 24 hours.

Here you have the results.

Anyway, please do not get to this point. Clean with water all the equipment as soon as you finish the dive, and avoid this kind of situations.

Buceoalpinismo en Malta – Diveclimbing in Malta

These are the strokes used for climbing.

In summer 2008 I spent a week diving in Malta, specifically in the island of Gozo. It was a great experience, the visibility of the water gives you dives with incredible light contrasts. Maybe one of the most famous dives is the Blue Hole (nothing to be related with the one in Dahab, this one is close to the surface), but I will talk about another dive. Today is about my first dive there: Reqqa Point, in Marsalforn.

Almost all the dives there are shore dives, and you access to the water after crossing rocky saline stones. Diving center drives to the closest point, and with all the equipment on you (except the fins) you have to walk between 100 and 400 meters, sometimes with a little gradient. If you add the temperature, very hot, you have to be very well hydrated because on this walk you only think about water.

Generally you jump with the fins on your hands, because put them on the rocks sometimes is not easy. Anyway, as you see the environment before the dive is challenging, but the sea worth’s it.
Dive is a wall between -12 to -35 depth, with two nice caves on the extremes, a pinnacle really nice and a huge amount of live.

The exit uses to be a ladder, like in all other dives in Gozo, which resolves the 1m-1,5m between surface and the rocks. A few days ago, this ladder was broken and laid at -10. I did not understand our guide who, before the dive, thrown a stroke with a weight at the end. When we were closed to the end of the dive and saw the ladder, I understand the crazy exit we were going to do.

At -2 deep, you had to take the fins of, and start climbing through the stroke. The thing was a little easy while you were underwater, but on the surface you realize how heavy your gauge is, and aware of the difficulty for your boots to make you sure on a slippery surface. As soon as your first stage was accessible for any other diver on the rocks, they could help you with the weight.

I did the impossible for using a boat on the next dive. Many other divers were frustrated as me after the first dive, because the could do it. But for a boat, they required 8 divers and 10 additional euros for the dive… so as I had to save money I thought to give a second chance to the shore dives. The next day, we were going to another point, but as one of the group had no computer, imagine the dive we did again…

Despite of this things, I will come back to Malta, because I loved it. And it is where I saw my first seahorse, and this is always something special!!!

Por fin tengo mi nueva linterna – Finally, I have my new torch.

Since I saw a friendo using this torch on a trip to Egypt, I have been looking for somebody who can buy me another one. This was in 2008, so it is a little difficult. It’s a Dragonsub Microlitium 3. Last Friday I found a website selling it, aleteando.com, and in the afternoon I went to their shop in Parla. A pretty long trip, but it has worth it. The little Dragonsub is at home.

It has 3 led of 750 lumens, and an autonomy of more than 2 hours, it is a real canyon of light!! The good thing is that I have already tested it, in night dives gives an intense bundle of light, and in daily dives, it provides a good light too, not like other led torches.

I have been very explicit on the shop information because I have seen in many forums that people has some difficulties for acquiring the products of this brand. The truth is it took me 3 years to do it (in between I tried a Barbolight and an Aqualight), and this is because Dragonsub has a very peculiar distribution system.

Four days before my next trip, I have all items for my luggage. Revised all précised refills and a minimum first aid kit. In a little while I will try my new Dragonsub in my night dives at the other side of the Atlantic. And I am very, very satisfied.

Have a nice Monday, and let’s continue tomorrow!!

I could say that of all diving courses I have done, the most impacting has been the Rescue Course. From this course, my perception of diving has changed completely.

This is a course which you have to take special caution choosing your instructor. My recommendation, look for somebody with a long experience on this course, and who takes enough time for doing it. It is essential to learn how to make a self-rescue, recognize a potential stress before the dive, which can generate a panic underwater, or resolve a real panic problem, active or inactive, or an emergency underwater.

For me, this course did not finish when I received my certification. Luckily, I have never been on a situation rescuing an unconscious diver underwater or doing a CPR, but I have to admit that before any dive, while I prepare my gauge, I can not help but being alert if anybody is nervous, or underwater. Any trouble, if it is not resolve by yourself or with help of somebody else, can provoke a vicious circle that finishes at least with a fright.

I believe all divers should do this course; at least I hope my buddy dive will do it soon. If anything happens to me underwater, he is the one who can help me. So this is a serious matter.

Here you have two photographs of our last trip to Aguilas – Murcia. He is our guide helping a diver of another group. The third photo is from a course in Almeria.

Happy Friday and if you are diving this weekend, have so much fun. I envy you, but in a week, the story will be different!!

Searching on the memories logbook…uhuhuh…

I used the yesterday’s festivity for starting the organization of luggage for my super-tryp, that will start in 9 days!! And I updated the logbook, my diving diary. On the last trips I have been so lasy, and I did not comment any dive. It is good to follow the rules, and even when a lot of people ask me why I continue updating the logbook, and comment it does not worth it, the truth is that I see it very useful.

First, because follow the PADI recommendations, as diver I have to register all my dives; second because it helps to remember the weights with each diving suit, for example, and third because on nondiving seasons, the comments I write help me to remember the dives I have done. And this is good on those days without dives, when it is because of the weather or for your personal economy.

I have updated the comments of Javea dives. And this helps me more, because Ivan, our guide on those dives with Cabo la Nao, told me he was hurt for not mentioning on the blog. He made that the four dives were great, and he showed a great hability for finding live underwater. And I have reminded again my adventures with my camera, which I told here a few weeks ago.

I have my logbook ready for next dives. I really think it is important to have it updated, even when your computer keeps your statistics. There are places, like Columbretes, where they require to check the logbook and be aware you have a minimum dives, because in other case, you have to stay on the boat without diving. What do you think? Is it relevant to update the logbook? Are you doing it?

Feliz lunes!!

As today is Friday, I want to propose you a movie for this weekend, for sure you have already watched it, but it worth’s a second view, and if you have never seen it, you have to watch it!!

It has all the magical ingredients for being a goal: The director, Luc Besson. A great starring, Jean Reno (by the way, he demonstrates great abilities for free diving), and an exceptional theme, the big blue, an intense relationship between a man and the sea. The truth is that the guy is not very expressive, but images talk by themselves.

Here you have the commercial in English, because I think it is cooler than Spanish one. Please, remember the movie is from 1988, so some parts of the atrezzo (poor Arquete, sometimes she seems like a clown) are out of fashion.

Have a great weekend, breath bubbles and if not, enjoy with a movie!

Today is Wednesday, so it is the turn of another wreck. Today it is a classic, probably the most famous wreck: SS Thistlegorm. I think I made around 12-15 dives down there, and every single time I have the same feelings. Maybe because I had the descends and ascends with more current in my whole life, maybe because the majesty of its 126 meters long, maybe because diving there alone has been one of my best dives in my life, listening only to my breath.

A little history for the ones who does not know this wreck. It was a ship bringing ammunitions to the British Army, and it was bombed the October 6th, 1941. One of the locomotive was launched with the explosion and lays close to the wreck. As it had ammunition, this made the explosion stronger, and nothing could be done. In less than an hour the ship was sink at -30 meters. Nine people lost their live.

The wreck was discovered by Jacques Cousteau, and was one of the starring of the movie “The world of silence”, awarded with an Oscar of the Academy. I reserve my opinion about the behavior of the crew with this discovery, I will just say that they didn’t make public the position of the wreck. Until it was rediscovered by an Israeli diver in 1974.

The place is visited everyday by hundreds of divers. This contributes to deteriorate the wreck really fast. Nevertheless, the beauty of this wreck in the middle of nowhere in the Red Sea is indescribable. Here you have a video of one of the dives in my last trip there. Enjoy it!!

Medicinas y buceo, enemigos irreconciliables? – Medicament and diving, irreconcilable enemies?

This Monday has been a very hard start for this week. I arrived to work and discovered that five minutes before, somebody entered to the office and stole my computer. From that point everything went from bad to worse.

Fortunately when I arrived home, we have been remembering the best moments of last weekend. Because, when you go on a diving weekend with friends, all conversations finish on topics related to diving.

One of the conversations was about if it was convenient to try to reduce a nasal congestion before diving. All of us, at least reading the open water manual, we have heard that we are taking a risk that the effect of the medication finishes before the ascend, but it seems it is not a relevant topic for most of us. For me, it is like when you are taking the driving license exam. You know that you should not miss the STOP sign, but many people, when they have the license, forget about this risk. Maybe if you do it today, you have not an accident, but if you do not respect the sign ever, one day you will be scared to death.

My opinion is that if you have a cold, it is better not to dive. Maybe you can compensate ears on the descend, but if you accumulate mucus on the sine during the dive…the ascend can be very painful. If you normally have mucus, before dive inhale sea water, because it is a very effective way of cleaning your nose.

Here you have some photos taken in Aguilas on July. It was a very funny weekend we spent diving with Buceo Estela.

See you tomorrow!!

Hi there!, how was the weekend?

As I told you last week, finally I went to Cabo de Gata with a few friends, one of them was a student of Advanced Open Water. As I saw on the forecast, the weather was a complete disaster. The first day we just could use the boat on the first dive, and as we really wanted to dive, the second was done from the coast.

The second dive was like diving on a washing machine. Just when I thought that was a very bad idea, a huge group of small barracudas crossed in front of us. It took just 3 minutes, but that vision, worth the previous dive.

Yesterday, we got up without any hope, because during night the wind was blowing very strong. At the diving center, they told us the sea was in better conditions, and we were going to go to one of my favorite dive, The grouper stone.

This is a dive that always surprises you. And really it surprised us. As I was diving with an students, I left my camera on the boat. This is a guarantee that you are going to see something special, and then you regret for leaving the camera on the boat. The surprise didn’t make us wait. When we were getting the bottom, at -32 meters, a turtle crossed in front of us, as we weren’t there, gently, like it had the rest of its life in front of it. You can imagine the 8 of us went as fast as we could, for enjoying it as much as possible. After that moment, everything was very normal, groupers, little barracudas, eels… Suddenly, a turtle had made a 180 on our weekend. We forgot the dives of Saturday, and all fears for the bad weather.

I give you a few images of the weekend. Quality is not good but, who cares? Because suddenly, we saw a turtle!!
